Teaming Up to Protect Young Athletes

The Brain Injury Association of Washington (BIAWA) is teaming up with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Seattle Seahawks as part of a campaign to help protect young athletes from a serious, but often underestimated health threat - concussion. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that can disrupt the way the brain normally works. As many as 3.8 million sports-and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States each year.

This campaign, “Washington Heads Up: Concussion in Sports,” is an expansion of CDC’s “Heads Up: Concussion in High School” and “Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports” initiatives and includes materials and information to help coaches identify concussions and take immediate steps to respond when a concussion is suspected. Campaign spokesman and former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Brock Huard will be featured in the campaign’s TV public service announcement, expected to air later in 2008.

Our hopes are to provide support groups and advocacy in North Spokane, Deer Park, Colfax/Pullman, Post Falls and CDA, networking with Ellensburg, Stevens County, Yakima, Walla Walla and the Tri-cities along with a staffed phone support Monday through Friday 10-4 and networking with others providing and sharing information, resources and idea's.  Meanwhile coordinating a advocacy grassroots movement combining forces with other advocacy groups with common needs and goals believing that this is a civil rights issue where our rights are toyed with and in most cases we are exploited.  There needs to be a unity to change our current system, but the good news it that our own system is poised for reform and creation of services.  We deserve the same services and resources that are available to other people.   Our time to stand up and create a standard in services, advocates helping survivors through the process.  The information on who is the experts we need, how do we find them, how to meet basic needs.  I won't lie it is a experience that will make or break you.  I believe with the knowledge and information we can increase our odds of returning to a somewhat normal life.  We must educate our communities, friends and even our doctors.  We are our own best experts, so it becomes our responsibility to educate ourselves on the options and work with our doctors coming up with what’s best for us.   There are so many incredible people out there together there is nothing we cannot achieve.

This site is dedicated to Alexis, Arionna and Carey from the extreme loss and pain their family had to go through due to lack of imformation in hopes that it can help save other families who will be going through a TBI
